And in order to add the ability to communicate documents and data at a distance, the facsimile and data services were placed on top on the switched telephone network. Getting To The Point – Phones
Data transport, video conferencing, email, instant messaging, web browsing, and other forms of distributed collaboration are now part of the expanded communication from a distance which we have at present. First, these types of communications were all carried through copper wires but presently it has expanded to other means including microwave, terrestrial wireless, satellite, hybrid fiber/coaxial cable, and broadband fiber transport. What this is showing us are the great changes that have gone through technology used for telecommunications over the past fifty years. We now see that the industry is broader than it was in the past. Multiple service providers which includes telephone companies, cable system operators, internet service providers, wireless carriers, and satellite operators are now part of the telecommunications industry. Software based applications with emphasis on communications is included in the industry today and intermediate layers of software that are incorporated into end-to-end communications services. If we will broadly define what telecommunication is today, it means that every layer involved in communication at a distance is part of the telecommunication industry. So talk about a facility based telecommunication provider these day means that these companies service commercial customers and residential customers with a single line to some of the largest private employers. These telecommunications providers also offer VoIP plans, cloud phone systems and many other applications that will cater to the needs of our economy and our social system.
